I realized what I enjoy writing the most. It's not video games, it's the interaction of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Almost all stories focusing on the extraordinary go into detail on how a mundane world would react to the unknown's sudden appearance but not a lot stick around to see what happens to the world that has gotten over the "it's scary, shoot it" phase. This one wasn't so much a specific game joke as it was trying to build a sense of a world where the extraordinary are just getting on with their lives.
DryKirby's trying out a new style, what do you think?
17th Nov 2014, 12:36 AM
DryKirby, this is freaking beautiful. It's so compact and attractive! Not to mention the colored linework carries the spirit of
Brawl in the Family.
The blended backgrounds are also awesome, as are the varied view angles and perfect composition / use of space.
Gosh, I'm legitimately jealous of how nice this looks. Maybe it's time to reevaluate how
17th Nov 2014, 1:35 AM
Ah, thanks, Giga! Means a lot coming from you!
About the art, I wanted to do something a bit unique, since I've felt my art was kind of stagnating in the last two comics. I put extra detail in the poses and lineart in general, tried out a new style for eyes (hooray for colored irises), and even filled in the outlines. The blue color was inspired by
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
, but it does resemble
Brawl in the Family
as well, doesn't it?
Eventually, I realized that the lineart was coming out so well, I wanted to make the comic's colors visually striking as well. After okaying it with Guybrush and Box, I began to color in what I'd started. I chose very bluish and subdued colors to match the outlines, but you'll notice that Pit, being supernatural, has a warm "aura" of colors around him. This allows him to pop out and contrast with the cooler colors of the Mages and the background.
Also, a few minor details:
- I usually draw people talking with gritted teeth whenever they're frustrated, surprised, or being expository, but Box usually colors it in with a regular mouth color - see panel 2 of comic 118,
Nobody Suspects an Ink
. I was finally able to show it here, though.
- Black Mage is apparently reading a book on robotics, but he burns it out of frustration in panel 2.
- I was originally going to include a reference to Double Date from Rhythm Heaven Fever, with the boy and his crush sitting on a bench a bit away, but I couldn't find a chance to fit it in. White Mage is sitting in pretty much the same way the crush does, though.
- Special thanks to my friend Carol for suggesting Pit's face in panel 4.
You did good.
- Speaking of Pit's face, I read up on
on TV Tropes. Apparently I've been doing that a lot, which is a bad thing, so in panel 2 Pit's mouth is properly on the front of his head. Woohoo.
So yeah! Enough ranting about comic creation. This one has a followup that'll be coming out within the next two weeks, so look forward to that. Thanks, y'all.

Oh God, cheeky mouth.
Someone once said that it looks like characters have two mouths when that's done and I've never been able to unsee it.
I like how you okay'd it with me.
As in, there was no question. The conversation just went "You're not coloring this week." and I was like "Oh, okay."
17th Nov 2014, 4:46 AM
Well, I talked about it with Guybrush and he was like, "That's cool, but tell Box too." So not really like okaying, I guess, but more like informing. So don't shoot the messenger. Unless the messenger is the deliverer.

Next comic will be a little while, Giga has to wrangle with some homework.

Dry this is glorious and you are glorious. I'd love if this style continued, to be honest, though I don't want to put Box out of a job either. Hnnnnnng conflicted
18th Nov 2014, 12:56 AM
This looks good, but it will take me a bit to get used to.
18th Nov 2014, 2:51 PM
I have to say, I don't like this style. I don't mind coloured outlines, it's when the entire thing seems to have a colour filter on; in this case, blue. I get what you mean about making Pit pop out, but I think you need to make the other characters actually involved in the scene pop out as well, so we can more easily see them. It actually took me time to work out where the Mages ended and the background began in the first panal, and I'm sure the 'blue filter' effect is to blame.
18th Nov 2014, 3:30 PM
Is that so? I tried to distinguish the characters from the background by giving the background no outlines at all, and I can see them just fine, but I can also see how it'd be hard to tell them apart. I'll try to make everyone stick out next time, not just one character. Thanks for your response!
EDIT: Also, the "blue filter" was intentional - it was meant to give the scene a palette that helps tie the whole thing together and make it aesthetically pleasing. I'm planning on doing something similar with an upcoming comic, so I'll be sure to follow your advice.
18th Nov 2014, 7:41 PM
I think you might have been thrown off by the fact that Panels 1-3 all share large, similarly colored objects (BM's cloak, the sidewalk, and the sky are all blue; BM's hat and the bench are both yellow). I think it's less the outlines and more a need to vary the brightness in the colors.
That said, I really enjoy this soft, pastel aesthetic and don't find a real problem with it. The scene composition is always clear to me. To each his own, I suppose.
18th Nov 2014, 11:15 PM
Maybe it's just because I don't like pastel colors, never really have,
I think this particular style really lacks any focal point. All the colors lean towards the cool end of the spectrum with the aforementioned "blue filter" and none of them really stand out or feel warm except for the fire in Panel 2 and Pit's red gem.
I feel like a couple of aspects, things like BM's eyes or WM's red triangle things could be made brighter.
But that's just me, I udnonfoikml
18th Nov 2014, 11:45 PM
So I need to vary my color depth, then. Got it, next time there will be more variety. And ORANGE outlines.
19th Nov 2014, 12:10 AM
I can honestly say I like this style a fair deal, it is very "clean" (in that I can understand at a glance what is on display) and it has a fair deal of style to it all the same that helps the artwork stand out.
19th Nov 2014, 7:52 PM
I like the style.
19th Nov 2014, 9:41 PM
I'm really liking this style here!

28th Nov 2014, 10:19 PM
I think the alt text will connect a few dots.
25th May 2015, 2:29 AM
But I just had to leave a comment here.
And that comment is I'd think it'd be cool (i.e. funny) if Black Mage ever made an actual attempt at flirting... and that's it. My train of thought doesn't waste much time making tracks.
26th May 2015, 1:38 AM
I drew a flirty Black Mage a little over two years ago for Valentine's Day, so you could always take a gander at that if it's what you're into.
20th Jul 2015, 12:33 AM
The fact that it's basically BM failing DOES makes it funny...
Oh geez I just realized that could be a thing. FORGET I SAID.
